A Schematic for Servant-Leadership
Series: 1 Timothy
In 1 Timothy 3:8-13, Paul describes the sort of character deacons are to possess, rather than focusing on the functions they were to perform.  There are many similarities between the expected character of an overseer and that of a deacon, leading us to understand that this was not a lesser leadership position in any way.  Deacons just had a different focus or set of responsibilities.

There are 5 things which deacons should do, according to the requirements Paul lists in this passage: 1) A Deacon Should Show Consistent Self-Control; 2) A Deacon Should Hold Solid Christian Convictions; 3) A Deacon Should Have a History of Demonstrating a Heart for Service; 4) A Deacon Should Faithfully Lead His Family; and 5) A Deacon Should Serve Confidently, Affirmed by Christ and His Church.

Spiritual maturity & obedience are essential parts of a servant’s heart.

    What They Need to Lead
    Series: 1 Timothy
Good leadership in the church is important. In his letter to timothy, the Apostle Paul gives some guidelines for the type of person to seek out when looking for leaders in the church.

In 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Paul gives a list of 15 different things which should be observable in those who would serve the church as overseers. The one overarching quality necessary for these Christian leaders is living a life that is above reproach. The other 14 qualifications break down into four groups which will form the basis of our study together: 1) An overseer should lead a consistent Christian Life; An overseer should faithfully lead his family; 3 ) An overseer should have a history of humble Christian living; and 4 ) An overseer should respectable in the eyes of the non-Christian community.

Live a life that can be an example to others, especially if you lead.

A Proper Approach to Public Worship
    Series: 1 Timothy
1 Timothy 2 contains Paul's instructions for proper attitudes and behavior within the church, particularly as we gather in public worship.  Some in our culture might view the things Paul has to say here as "triggering."  But, we need to let God's Word speak and we need to seek to understand what exactly He is saying through it.

In 1 Tim. 2:8-15 there are 3 things which we should take to heart as believers in Christ: 1) We Need a Proper Attitude towards Prayer; 2) We Need a Proper Attitude towards Appearance; and 3) We Need to Prioritize God's Intention for Our Instruction.

Pursue Godliness in worship, prioritizing God’s design.

    The Priority of Prayer
    Series: 1 Timothy

Priorities are important in every area of our lives. Did you know that there is also a priority when it comes to our worship of God? That priority is prayer. God wants us to be a praying people. We find this truth emphasized in a number of different of Scripture.
In 1 Timothy 2:1-7 there is a single unifying focus Paul has in view – prayer. More particularly, Paul highlights 3 things we are to do regarding prayer: 1) Make it Your Practice to Pray for All People; 2) Pray That People Would Come to a Personal Knowledge of God’s Saving Power; and 3) Humbly Proclaim the Primary Truths of the Gospel.
Pray that all people would hear and respond to the Gospel.

    Hang On Tight
    Series: 1 Timothy
Paul had begun his charge to Timothy by urging him to warn the false teachers in Ephesus to stop devoting themselves to useless "myths."  From there, he explained the true nature of the Gospel, on which Timothy was to focus.

With the final verses of chapter 1, Paul commands Timothy to fight the good fight - a calling that rests on all Christians.  Three things emerge in these verses: 1) Holding Firmly to Our Faith is a Battle We Must Be Ready For; 2) We Are to Live in Light of What We Learn from God’s Word; and 3) Rejecting God’s Truth and Will for Our Lives Brings Real Trouble.

Cling to God’s truth and let it lead you into right living.

    Grateful for Grace
    Series: 1 Timothy
Early in Paul’s first letter to Timothy, the apostle finds himself filled with thanks and praise as he reflects on God’s grace and mercy in his life, especially as he considers how unworthy he is of it.

Paul’s words and example to us in our passage show us 3 things: 1) Thank God for His Grace; 2) The Gospel is Simple – Christ Came to Save Sinners; and 3) Give God the Praise He Alone Deserves.

God’s grace and mercy are abundantly ours through faith in Christ.

The Lawful Use of the Law
    Series: 1 Timothy
Some view the Bible as containing an outdated list of laws and requirements that just don’t fit with our modern world and its values today.  What’s the point?  Is it even relevant for people living in the 21st century?  In a word, "Yes!"  God's Law and His commandments are absolutely relevant and have a point today as well, though it may not be the point most people assume.

In 1 Tim. 1:8-11, Paul highlights the lawful use of the law.  He makes 3 points in these verses: 1) The Law is Good, But Doesn’t Get Us to God; 2) The Law Shows Us Shameful Specifics of Our Sin; and 3) The Sound Teaching of the Gospel Shows Us How to Be Saved.

The Law is good, but limited, so we need to ground ourselves in the Gospel.

    Muddy Waters
    Series: 1 Timothy
There is a right and wrong focus when it comes to the teaching of God’s Word.  That is what Paul addresses at the beginning of his letter to Timothy.  He spends the bulk of this paragraph detailing a single admonition: 1) Steer Clear of Strange Teaching.  Nestled in the middle of this warning, is Paul’s other point: 2) Let Faith & Love Be Your Focus.

Our teaching is to faithfully follow God’s Word and focus on love.

    An Encouraging Introduction
    Series: 1 Timothy
Paul wrote 1 Timothy to a younger pastor in a difficult ministry.  He wrote not only to Timothy himself, but intended that the letter would be read to the entire church.  His purpose was to give instruction on a number of topics, and to affirm Timothy’s ministry.  But, he also wrote to encourage this young pastor.  Right from the introduction of his letter, Paul immediately offers encouragement to Timothy.

In the opening 2 verses of 1 Timothy we see that 1) Paul Provides an Encouraging Example of Faithfulness, and 2) Paul Encourages Timothy with Truths of the Christian Faith.

Let's commit to encourage one another to hope in Christ and remember God’s gifts of grace, mercy, and peace.
