Sep 6, 2026Is There a Point to All This?Series: EcclesiastesImagine someone opening a Bible for the first time, looking for some encouragement, and the verse they come across reads like this, “Pointless; absolutely 100% of no value at all; every single thing in your life is futile and meaningless.” Not exactly what we expect when turning to the pages of God’s Word. In fact, we likely expect quite the opposite – we expect God to encourage us, give us hope, and purpose in life. Why would He inspire someone to write something so dark and depressing?There’s really no sugar coating it. The book of Ecclesiastes is more than just a bit pessimistic in its outlook on life. Thankfully, we will discover that the author isn’t completely negative. He does see some value in the events and activities of our lives. But, on the whole, he sees living for the things in this life as nothing more than an exercise in futility – it is all meaningless.Looking at only the first two verses of the book we are introduced to the author and what amounts to the motto for the entire book. First, we need to remember that 1) God Doesn't Change. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Next, for as much as we might say we don’t like change, Christians must change. Maybe there have been times when you felt emotionally or spiritually like a ship that had been run aground; times when you felt completely stuck, and things seemed hopeless. Perhaps it was the loss of a loved one, or a life-threatening diagnosis, or some other time when everything ground to a halt in your life, leaving you feeling like an easy target. Most of these individuals had served with Paul in ministry over the years; they were fellow workers, even friends.It can be easy to just breeze over these verses referencing people we don't really know anything about. Sprinters will practice over and over, coming up out of the blocks and getting up to speed. But, finishing the race is just as important. If you start well, but then stop running, you will not finish the race.One of the letters in which Paul uses this metaphor is the one we’ve been studying together. Towards the end of 2 Timothy Paul is essentially staring death in the face. Jul 19, 2026Following FaithfulnessSeries: 2 TimothyWe do a lot of learning by example in our lives. From our earliest moments we follow the example given to us by those who raised us. A parent spoon-feeding their baby will open their own mouth to encourage the baby to do the same. In school our teachers set examples for us to follow all the time – “Here’s how to spell that word; this is how you solve that math equation.” Hands-on skills are another area where examples help us learn. Whether changing the oil on a car or baking cookies, a good example is very helpful.When it comes to our relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ, the examples we choose to pattern ourselves after can have eternal consequences. That is one reason why the Apostle Paul makes such a point to call out false teachers and bad examples in the letters he writes. He wants his readers to be able to discern between the good and the bad, the right and the wrong.in 2 Timothy 3:10-13 we find Paul encouraging us to follow examples of faithfulness in Christian living. Three points can be discerned in our passage: 1) We Can Learn a Lot from Those Who Love the Lord; 2) Living for Christ Always Comes at a Cost; and 3) Deceitful Teaching Leaves One Drifting into Moral and Spiritual Decay.Learn from and follow good examples of Godly living.2 Timothy 3:10-13July 19, 2026To watch the video of this message, click here.
