Ready for the Fight – Reconnaissance
It is critical in any battle to know who and what you’re fighting against.  As Christians, we will find it difficult if not impossible to fight effectively in our spiritual battle if we can’t identify our adversary or his attacks.
In Ephesians 6:12, Paul does a little reconnaissance for us to help prepare us for the fight.  We will stand a much better chance in the battle if we know how our enemy fights – what are his tactics, what weapons does he use, who are his operatives, and how do they assault us?
Paul reveals 2 primary things in this passage – first he tells us that 1) The Spiritual Battle is Up Close & Personal – that is the nature of our fight.  Then, with the majority of the verse, he explains that 2) We Fight a Powerful Spiritual Enemy, But God is Stronger.

We prepare ourselves for the battle by knowing our enemy and his tactics.

Ready for the Fight – Basic Training
Our days on this earth will sometimes be a battle.  Beyond our daily struggles, we also face a spiritual battle for our eternal souls.  Satan and his forces want to do everything they can to keep people from coming to faith in Christ and living for Him.  This is a fight that takes place primarily on the spiritual plane, and honestly, it’s one we’re largely unaware of.

In the final chapter of Ephesians, Paul talks about the spiritual battle we face daily, and our need to be ready for the fight.  The beginning of the year is a great time for us to be reminded that we need to be ready for the fight.  In Eph. 6:10-11, Paul gives us the substance of our Basic Training: 1) The Lord is the Source of Our Strength; and 2) The Christian Must be Armed.

We need to be strong, alert, and ready to stand our ground in the fight we are in.

Do You See What I See?
    Series: Christmas
Sometimes you have to know what you’re looking for to truly see what’s in front of you. I think this is especially the case with Jesus Christ. You have to know what you’re looking for to see Him for who He truly is.

In our text this morning we meet one man who knew just what he was looking for, and he found it in the baby Jesus. To others, Jesus might have looked no different than any other baby, but to the trained eye, to the man who was waiting for God’s gift of a Messiah, He was a hidden treasure.

Today, we’re going to look at another passage from the Christmas story, found in Luke 2:22-35. We’ll first consider: 1) What Others Saw, then we’ll look at 2) What Simeon Saw, finally, we’ll pause to ask 3) What We See.

To see Jesus is to see salvation.

Looking Back at the Future Hope of the Past
    Series: Christmas
The Jews were looking forward to, and eagerly anticipating, the arrival of God’s promised Messiah for several hundred years before He was born.  That’s a long time to wait for such a wonderful gift.  With this message we look back to some of the promises made by God, through the prophet Isaiah, before finishing up in the New Testament.  There we see this hope fulfilled, and we are reminded to keep looking forward with hope to the Lord's return.

Our hope for the future is well founded on God’s faithfulness in the past – God is with us!

    Supporting the Lord’s Servants
    Series: 1 Timothy
With the closing verses of 1 Timothy 5, Paul gives three related instructions for dealing with pastor/elders in the church: 1) Show Appreciation for Those Who Shepherd the Church; 2) Be Fair in Addressing Accusations & Sin in a Leader’s Life; and 3) Use Patience & Discernment in Deciding Who Will Lead the Church.  A fourth, and seemingly unrelated instruction Paul gives seems to 4) Encourage Pastors to Pursue a Healthy Lifestyle.

    A Caring Community
    Series: 1 Timothy
God’s Church is to be a caring community.  When we are living life the way God calls us to in His Word, we see this taking place constantly in real-time.  Healthy churches not only minister to people’s spiritual needs, but to their physical needs as well.

In 1 Timothy 5:1-16, Paul lays out God’s instructions to Timothy and the church, that they may be a caring community.  The focus is predominately on widows, but the principles can be applied broadly: 1) Be Respectful of Others around You; 2) Show Compassion to Widows Who Demonstrate Christian Character; 3) Accept Appropriate Responsibility for Caring for Others; and 4) A Warning & Instruction for Younger Widows.

We are called to show respect, compassion, and responsibility toward others in the church.

    Leading By Example
    Series: 1 Timothy
The Apostle Paul appointed Timothy to serve as the pastor of the church in Ephesus prior to his departure.  In 1 Timothy 4:11-16, Paul issues a series of commands to the young pastor, encouraging him to lead by example, and live in a way that demonstrates what a Christian life should look like.

Although many of Paul's commands are particular to Timothy's calling as a pastor, there is still much that can be generally applied to the life of every believer: 1) Live Your Life as an Example to Others; 2) Serve with the Spiritual Gifts God has Given You; and 3) Focus on Progress over Perfection in Your Spiritual Growth.

Set an example in spiritual life and service.
