When God Leaves You Speechless
Series: Christmas
Zacharias and Elizabeth struggled with childlessness until an angel of the Lord revealed good news to them. We learn much from their examples to us: 1) We can serve God even in times of struggle; 2) We should rejoice in what God has revealed; 3) We should make the effort to rightly deal with doubts and disappointments; 4) We should give God the glory for the good in our lives.

Seek and serve the Lord, even in times of struggle – trust Him and His promises.

    Ornaments for Christ
    Series: Christmas
Decorations are going up for Christmas, with beautiful ornaments adorning trees in living rooms everywhere.  If we use the metaphor of a Christmas Tree and its ornaments to represent the body of Christ, with each of us as an ornament, what kind of ornament are you?  How are you hanging in there as a Christian and an integral part of the body of Christ?  We can choose what sort of ornament we will be.

Let’s choose to live our lives according to God’s guidance and for His glory.

    Undercover Christians
    Series: John
At the end of John 19 we encounter two undercover Christians.  Through their examples we learn that it can be tempting to hide our faith in Christ.  But, we also see that Christ can strengthen and change undercover Christians.

Look to the Lord for the courage and strength to stand for Him in your daily life.

    Pierced But Not Broken
    Series: John
We know that Jesus suffered and died on a cross.  Did it break Him?  John's answer in our passage is a resounding "No!"  Instead, we see that Jesus' physical suffering fulfilled Scripture and that our Savior's death defeated sin.

We can find forgiveness because of the finished work of Christ.

    Not Just Business as Usual
    Series: John
Jesus was condemned as a criminal, and led out to be crucified.  Regrettably, this was an all too common sight around Jerusalem.  For as shocking as the brutal executions were, they were common enough that it had become just business as usual.  But, it was not just business as usual on the day that Jesus was crucified.  Those involved and those passing by were in danger of missing the significance of the most important event in all history.

Christ’s crucifixion provided the greatest outcome in history – the offer of forgiveness and salvation.

    Cowardly Concessions
    Series: John
Pilate had several opportunities to handle things rightly with Jesus.  Instead of doing what he knew was right, he allowed himself to be pushed to do what was wrong, simply because it was easier and would preserve his position an power.

His example serves as a warning to us - Don't try to appease the world; Don't boast in your position, power or status; Don't fear the world more than you fear the Lord.

Commit to stand firm in Christ - don't compromise your Christian faith.

Blinded by Lies, Confronted by the Truth
    Series: John
Lies can blind us to the truth. In Jesus' first appearance before the Roman Governor, Pilate, we find three facts about lies and truth: 1) Lies Blind Us to Our Spiritual Condition; 2) The Truth Can Change Our Hearts; 3) Blinding Lies Lead to Poor Decisions.

Jesus came into the world to testify to the truth. Listen to Him!

    Cross Examination: Denial by Fire
    Series: John
There is much we can learn from Peter’s momentary failure.  His denials show us two things that can make us more susceptible to failure – being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and giving the wrong answer for the wrong reason.  We need to consider the right way to handle our wrong actions.

We can all fail Christ at times, but we can find Christ's forgiveness at all times.

    Cross Examination: Jesus on Trial
    Series: John
John records one of the trials Jesus went through before He was condemned, and here we see that even Jesus experienced injustice.  In His reply to this, Jesus shows us the right way to respond to being wronged.

When you are faced with injustice and false accusations, focus on trusting God and speaking the truth in love.

    In God We Trust
Is God trustworthy? Can we take His Word as absolute truth? What about when it doesn't match our experience?

These are the questions that face us as we study Psalm 91. What we find is that "Yes" we can trust God and His Word. In the midst of trying times, this passage encourages us to Seek God's Presence, Understand God's Protection, and Expect God's Provision.

Trust God to be with you and see you through trying times.
