Declaration of Dependence
Series: John
Liberty, or freedom, is a concept that is highly valued in our culture.  On Independence Day, a day we celebrate national freedom, what we find in John 8:31-36 is that true freedom is only found through faith in Christ.

Jesus clearly shows us that we are slaves to sin, that slavery to sin leaves us outside of God’s family, and our initial reaction to sin is to deny we’re enslaved to it.  Christ alone offers us true freedom, that freedom comes to us as we respond to the truth, and we need to continue to live in light of the truth.

True freedom is only found through faith in Christ – declare your dependence.

Stay in Your Lane & Follow Jesus
    Series: John
With the closing verses of the Gospel of John, Jesus reminds Peter that no matter what else happens in life, his goal should be to follow the Lord.  We can trust Christ for our future - We should follow Christ without comparing ourselves to others - We can trust that Christ is coming back - and We can trust the reliability of God's Word.

We can trust and follow the Lord in everything, even when we don't understand it all.

    Dealing with Doubt
    Series: John
Jesus appears again to His disciples, including Thomas, who was absent on the previous occasion.  Understandably, Thomas was skeptical about Jesus' resurrection.  But, upon seeing Jesus, he believed. This passage helps us see how we can deal with our doubt.  Don’t discourage doubt – encourage evaluation of the evidence – and respond to the rationality of the Christian faith.

Evaluating the evidence will show you the rationality of the Christian faith.

    Not Just Business as Usual
    Series: John
Jesus was condemned as a criminal, and led out to be crucified.  Regrettably, this was an all too common sight around Jerusalem.  For as shocking as the brutal executions were, they were common enough that it had become just business as usual.  But, it was not just business as usual on the day that Jesus was crucified.  Those involved and those passing by were in danger of missing the significance of the most important event in all history.

Christ’s crucifixion provided the greatest outcome in history – the offer of forgiveness and salvation.

    Cowardly Concessions
    Series: John
Pilate had several opportunities to handle things rightly with Jesus.  Instead of doing what he knew was right, he allowed himself to be pushed to do what was wrong, simply because it was easier and would preserve his position an power.

His example serves as a warning to us - Don't try to appease the world; Don't boast in your position, power or status; Don't fear the world more than you fear the Lord.

Commit to stand firm in Christ - don't compromise your Christian faith.

Blinded by Lies, Confronted by the Truth
    Series: John
Lies can blind us to the truth. In Jesus' first appearance before the Roman Governor, Pilate, we find three facts about lies and truth: 1) Lies Blind Us to Our Spiritual Condition; 2) The Truth Can Change Our Hearts; 3) Blinding Lies Lead to Poor Decisions.

Jesus came into the world to testify to the truth. Listen to Him!
