    Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall
    Series: James
James uses the example of a person looking in a mirror to speak of what our approach to God’s Word should be – the whole purpose of looking into it ought to be with an eye toward making whatever changes we see that are needed.

Three things show up in James 1:22-25. 1) God’s Simple Direction to Us is, “Don’t Just Hear, Do!”; 2) A Deluded Outlook is Dangerous; 3) We Are Blessed as We Diligently Do All God Commands Us To.

Put into practice what you profess to believe.

    Taking a Good Hard Look
    Series: James
Our goal as Christians is not simply to go to heaven – it’s to become more like Christ on earth.  We need to strive to actively obey God’s commands, seeking to honor Him in all we say, think and do. If we’re going to be changed, we need to take a good hard look at our lives and evaluate where we need to be changed from the inside out.

In James 1:19-21, our author first explains that that 1) self-control is crucial to Christian obedience.  He then shows us that 2) human wrath does not achieve the righteousness of God.  The last verse of our text makes clear that 3) God wants us to have a right response to His Word.

In our quest for active obedience, we need to put aside our unrighteous anger.

    Snared by Your Own Bait
    Series: James
James takes a hard and honest look at temptation in James 1:12-18.  The first thing he focuses on is God’s Promise to Bless Us as We Persevere. God wants us to hang tough through trials & temptations, and He promises us a blessing once we’ve endured the tests of this life.  From there, James Traces the Source of Temptation.  He even traces the progression from temptation, to sin, to spiritual death.  The reality is that the Source of Temptation Traces Back to Ourselves.  Finally, James reminds us that The True Character of God is Goodness.  God is good & loving.  He is a giving God, and James points us toward one of God’s greatest gifts to us.

Though our good God may call us to endure trials, when it comes to temptation, we are the trouble.

    The Great Reversal
    Series: James
In James 1:9-11, our author addresses another trial of sorts – poverty vs. prosperity.  Just as in the leading up to this paragraph, James speaks to the issue at hand, then moves beyond and encourages us to consider our response to it.  In this passage James speaks of 1) A Proper Response to Poverty; and 2) A Proper Response to Prosperity.  We also need to consider how to have 3) A Proper Perspective on our Position.

We need to humbly trust in God’s promises, not in our potential.

    Figuring It Out
    Series: James
James has a few things to tell us regarding wisdom in trials.  Looking back at verses 2-4, James encourages us to Remember what God teaches us about trials.  From verses 5-8, James explains that we learn to make wise decisions by Recognizing our need for wisdom in trials – by Requesting God’s help, and Receiving an answer to our prayer.

We should respond to trials by praying faithfully for wisdom.

    The Positive Potential of Trials
    Series: James
Trials are something every one of us can relate to, and if there’s one thing we might all agree on about trials, it’s that we’d rather not go through them.

In the opening verses of the letter of James we have the briefest of introductions.  Then, James focuses our attention on two matters regarding trials: 1) The Christian’s response to trials; and 2) What God intends as the result of trials.

We can find joy in the midst of trials as we remember that God grows us through them and draws us to Him.

    The Miracles Around the Miracle
    Series: Easter
The resurrection of Christ is the greatest miracle of the Bible – both because of what happened, and because of the significance of that event for the Christian faith.  However, in our rush to get to the resurrection, we sometimes miss the other significant things that happened around the crucifixion & resurrection of our Lord.

When you look at the details from each of the Gospel writers, in addition to the resurrection itself, there are 6 other miracles that took place around the same time which merit consideration.  Add to that Jesus’ numerous post-resurrection appearances and you have a series of wonderful testimonies to the power of God and the significance of the resurrection.

Jesus was raised from the dead by the power of God. Our living Lord can forgive your sins and give you everlasting life!

When the Crowd Greeted the King
    Series: Easter
As we come up on Easter there is a critical question which has been asked and needs to be answered.  It’s not a riddle, but it has been called a mystery.  The answer to the question is vitally important, because it will directly impact a person’s future.  It is a question Jesus asked His disciples, and it’s the same, unspoken question that people were faced with at a parade nearly 2000 years ago.  Simply stated the question is, “Who is Jesus?”

Luke’s account of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem before His arrest and crucifixion shows us a variety of answers to the question, “Who is Jesus?”  Let's consider the answers illustrated by the people who were there, how Jesus answers the question, and then talk about people’s answers today.

Jesus is the King who came in peace & will come again in power.
